Treble Crochet: Tall, Airy Stitches for Drape and Lace
By The Slow Stitch · Terminology: US Crochet Terms · Reading time: 7 min read · theslowstitch.com
Treble crochet uses two starting yarn overs and three pull-throughs to make a tall, open stitch. Practise with a small swatch before using it in lace or a larger project. In UK terminology, this US stitch is called double treble crochet.
What You'll Learn
By the end of this tutorial you will be able to:
- Yarn over twice
- Pull through two loops three times
- Make a 15-stitch practice sample
- Count the turning chain consistently
What You Need
DK or sport weight cotton or bamboo blend for best drape
4.0 mm or 4.5 mm
Scissors, Tapestry needle
Use the materials above for practice, adjusting the hook if needed for comfortable stitches. For a finished project, follow its pattern’s yarn, gauge and care requirements.

Yarn Over Twice
Make a slip knot and chain 18. The four chains skipped at the start count as the first treble in this lesson. Yarn over twice from back to front: two wraps plus the original loop are on the hook.
Insert Hook in the Fifth Chain
For your foundation row, skip the first 4 chains from the hook. Insert your hook under the top loop of the 5th chain from your hook.
Yarn Over and Draw Up a Loop
Yarn over and pull the yarn through the chain. You should now have four loops on your hook. Gently lift your hook so all four loops are relaxed.
Pull Through First Two Loops
Yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops on your hook. Three loops remain.
Pull Through Next Two Loops
Yarn over again, pull through the next 2 loops on your hook. Two loops remain.
Pull Through the Final Two Loops
Yarn over one last time, pull through the final 2 loops. One loop remains. That is one finished treble crochet. Repeat into each remaining chain. Count 14 worked trebles plus the starting chain 4: 15 stitches total.
Work the Next Row
Chain 4 and turn; it counts as the first treble. Skip the stitch at its base. Work one treble under both loops of each remaining stitch, including the top of the previous turning chain. Count 14 worked trebles plus chain 4: 15 stitches total. Repeat for practice.
The Turning Chain Rule
Turning-chain convention for this lesson
Here, chain 4 counts as a treble. Skip its base stitch and finish subsequent rows in the top of the previous chain 4.

Common Problems
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stitches are loose and floppy in the middle | Letting the yarn overs slide down onto the narrow throat of the hook | Keep the loops on the thicker barrel of the hook and hold the column with your left thumb while pulling through. |
| Large gaping hole at the start of every row | Chain 4 is looser than the surrounding stitches | Try chaining 3 tightly instead of chain 4, or pull your first stitch after the chain snug. |
| Edge stitch count keeps shrinking | Missing the top chain of the turning chain 4 | Mark the 4th chain with a stitch marker right after making it. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is treble crochet good for warm winter scarves?
No, the open gaps allow wind right through. For warm winter wear, stick to half double crochet or moss stitch.
How do I make a double treble crochet (dtr)?
Yarn over three times instead of twice, and pull through two loops four times. It makes an even taller stitch.
Why do my treble stitches lean diagonally?
Tall stitches can show a noticeable lean. Check stitch placement and tension. Blocking may help the fabric settle, but follow the yarn’s care instructions and do not assume steam is suitable.
Can I use treble crochet in granny squares?
Yes, many modern granny square patterns use treble crochets in the corners to create dramatic points.
