Half Double Crochet: The Most Versatile Middle Stitch
By The Slow Stitch · Terminology: US Crochet Terms · Reading time: 6 min read · theslowstitch.com
If single crochet feels too slow and double crochet feels too holey, half double crochet is your Goldilocks stitch. It has the solid density of a single crochet with nearly the height of a double. Best of all, because of how the yarn wraps around the hook, half double crochet creates a secret third loop on the back of the stitch. When you work into that loop, you push the top V forward to make a ribbed fabric that looks remarkably like hand knitting.
What You'll Learn
By the end of this tutorial you will be able to:
- Make a 15-stitch practice row
- Work subsequent rows without counting chain 2
- Recognise the extra third loop
- Keep a consistent stitch count
What You Need
Worsted weight wool or acrylic blend
5.0 mm (US H/8)
Scissors, Tapestry needle
Use the materials above for practice, adjusting the hook if needed for comfortable stitches. For a finished project, follow its pattern’s yarn, gauge and care requirements.

Yarn Over and Insert Hook
Make a slip knot and chain 17. Yarn over and insert the hook into the third chain from the hook. The two skipped chains do not count as a stitch in this sample.
Pull Up a Loop
Yarn over and pull the strand through the stitch. You now have three loops on your hook, just like the start of a double crochet.
The Big Pull Through
Yarn over one more time. Instead of pulling through only two loops, draw the hook smoothly through all three loops on your hook at once. One loop remains on your hook. That is one half double crochet. Repeat into every remaining chain: 15 hdc in total.
The Turning Chain Rule for HDC
Chain 2 and turn. In this lesson, chain 2 does not count as a stitch. Work one hdc under both loops of each of the 15 stitches, beginning in the first stitch at the chain’s base. Do not work into the old turning chain. Count 15 hdc each row.
How to Find the Third Loop
Look just below the two loops of the top V for an extra horizontal bar created by the yarn over. When working unturned rounds it lies behind the V; after turning a row it is on the side facing you. Third-loop-only hdc is a separate texture variation. Keep working under both top loops for this plain practice sample.
The Turning Chain Rule
Turning-chain convention for this lesson
For this sample, chain 2 does not count. Work 15 hdc in every row, including the first and last real stitches.

Common Problems
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hook gets stuck trying to pull through all three loops | Loops on the hook are pulled too tightly before the final yarn over | Lift your hook upward after step 2 to lengthen the working loops before pulling through. |
| Edges are bumpy and inconsistent | Alternating between counting the chain 2 and not counting it | Use the same convention for every row: here, chain 2 does not count. Mark and count the 15 real stitches. |
| Fabric feels stiff like cardboard | Tension is too tight for the yarn weight | Go up half a millimetre on your hook (for example, move from 5.0 mm to 5.5 mm). |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is half double crochet good for blankets?
Half double crochet can make a pleasantly textured blanket. Openness and softness depend on yarn, hook, and tension; use a suitable pattern for the intended recipient.
What is the UK equivalent name?
In British crochet patterns, half double crochet is called half treble crochet (htr).
Can I use hdc for ribbed sweater cuffs?
Back-loop-only and third-loop-only hdc create different ribbed textures. Recovery depends on fibre and gauge, so follow a cuff pattern and check a sample.
How many chains do I skip on the foundation row?
Skip two chains and work your first hdc in the third chain from the hook.
